Zamindari History of Bengal :

The Zamindars of Bengal were the ruling class, in the Bengal region, in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent, which consists of territories East Bengal which is now Bangladesh and West Bengal. The Nawabs of Bengal ruled the area under the Mughal Empire from 1717 to 1880.

The Zamindars dominated most of the villages in Bengal. Zamindars were the rulers of demarcated areas, responsible for collecting revenue for the monarchy and rose into prominence during the British colonial era, owing to the opportunity availed by the British in India. The Zamindars are mostly credited with cultural, architectural, educational, economical development and urbanisation of Calcutta and discredited for the exploitation of rural Bengal.

The landowners or Zamindars existed as a class even before the Mughals and Sultanate took Bengal and Islam started penetrating these lands. But this changed under British East India Company. The concept of Zamindar had evoked a new dimension by the ‘Permanent Settlement Act-1793’, which for the first time confirmed the ownership of land by Zamindars in the Colonial Period.

 4. Bari Kothi Heritage Hotel :

Murshidabad, the last capital city of independent Bengal is situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi and is known for its rich culture and heritage. It was the Unknown Wealth Capital of the World. The region alone contributed 5% of the GDP of the World.

Both the Britishers and Jain merchants were earning great wealth and prosperity and so it lead to the construction of many palaces, temples and churches in the region. But then the sun had to set in Murshidabad and after the infamous Battle of Plassey (1757), the region of Murshidabad started losing its opulence and wealth. Soon the capital of Bengal shifted from Murshidabad to Calcutta and so did the economy eventually making the region entirely abandoned. Most of the Sheherwalis moved to Calcutta and abandoned their houses. The palaces were locked down and the beautiful temples and mosques were left in ruins for more than 50 years.

The Bari Kothi was built in the late 1700s. The name of the house, Bari Kothi (literally meaning the Palace of the Elder), was coined in the late 1800s since it was the house of the elder (bari) brother, Rai Bahadur Budh Sing Dudhoria. Bari Kothi is known across Murshidabad as one of the most architecturally significant houses in the region showcasing Greek, Roman and French architecture. The Bari Kothi is spread across three-fourth acres of Land and houses a Sheesh Mahal, Library, Music Room, Durbar Hall, Janana Chowk, Gaddi Ghar, Halwai Khana, Gulabi Chawara amongst other parts of the house. It was only in the year 2015 when a Canadian Architect and restoration specialist was invited to Bari Kothi to bring the palace to its former glory and make it into the first self-sustaining rustic luxury heritage hotel and First Palace to be restored to its former glory.

Although this house in Potashpur block is very close to Digha, the influence of Orissan culture is evident here. Murarimohan Das Mohapatra of the dynasty was a royal official under the Mughal rule on the border of Orissa. Panchetgarh in the past was given as a gift by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb for his hard work. There was a forest there then. Dense forests were cut down and settlements were established, average mansions surrounded by moats were built, temples were built. Paths began to flow from then. In 2018, Panchetgarh Rajbari was declared as Heritage Property by World Heritage Organization.
